Grats on your sobriety Tracist,
You know what I do is drink tea, Yogi brand makes a nice kind called 'women's moon cycle' (it also helps with mood and relaxation) and I also use rasberry leaf tea to help balance my hormones. Camomille and/or peppermint helps a lot in soothing the mind. Hot baths with epsom salts. Spoiling yourself helps, spend time in bed watching your favorite movies, reading magazines, eating rich ice cream, wearing cozy pjs..etc.
Also, I like what Roadie suggested, meditation/ deep breathing is essential. Also, remind yourself that this is temporary...it will pass.
Of course we will feel better not drinking during this special time, because alcohol constricts the blood vessels and can make cramping worse, it is also a depressant..but we already know that.
I have horrible symptoms and do take a mild antidepressant to help with PMS dysphoria (which is considered a mood disorder related to hormones). It has helped me a lot in maintaining a clear, relaxed and level head so I can treat the physical symptoms a lot easier. Talk to your doc if you feel it's something you could try.
Also, eliminate any stress and do some relaxation techniques (meditation, breathing, yoga, self-soothing, massage). Stress can make pms worse, it affects the delicate balance of hormones.
And...have patience with yourself, your body is still adjusting to your new sobriety (me too!) it has to heal still...so it will get better.
Best wishes
