We generally feel emotions so we can gain understanding, it can be difficult when we loose ourselves with-in these emotions. So we stay there in the hopes of understanding. And sometimes to gain that understanding we need to take a step back and gain a better view of what are perceiving.
For a more direct answer, yes you can set it down. But try not to discard it, pick up and feel it as much as you think you can handle to understand the lesson you should take from the experience and set it aside when it becomes to much.
