Its hard to quit doing it even when you don't need it to cope because like you said its addicting, because that's what it is -- it becomes an addiction that gets away from you.
No words of advice I'm afraid -- if you know what might be causing you to do it (in the beginning) thats a step in the right direction.
If you don't have a therapist/counsellor, would you consider going to one? It can help.
