I'm on SSDI and they went through 11 years of my 20 year work history to set the payout. I had a friend on SSI and she received about $600 a month, food stamps, and medicade. But after her mother passed and she inherited money they kicked her off of SSI.

I used a lawyer (they take 25% of backpay) and it took about 6 months to be approved. You also have to have medical paperwork and it helps that a Dr. will back your case. They went through 3 years of my medical history.
