Racing thoughts are so unpleasant and it seems that when appear, there is no rest from the noise, not during the day or at night.
I did find that lying in a quiet space on the floor and deep breathing helped, after a good 30 minutes. However, I count while I deep breathe.............
Deep breath............. in 2, 3, 4
Exhale....................1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
Repeat
When I focus on the counting, it distracts my mind from the racing.
The other thing that I ensure is that I get enough sleep, which usually involves taking trazadone and some clonazepam to knock me out. It is almost a necessity, because I don't need to sleep when I am hypomanic. I fall into deep sleep and do not have the racing thoughts.
