Chances are the image you selected exceeded the maximum size, although usually forums will tell you if this happened in the same page where you uploaded your image. If the upload was successful, then there would be able to see your image in the Edit Signature page of your profile. The other option is you didn't press "Save" at the bottom of the page after the upload was successful.
