I just looked up scurvy in wikipedia - without scurvy, we might never have used guinea pigs as guinea pigs - they develop scurvy too, as they are among the very few species who do not synthesize their own Vitamin C. Anyway, they would lose more sailors to scurvy than in battle. Rough!
