It's really tough to make friends--I've been trying, so I know. Just don't not try! Having friends IRL is an urgent part of building a support system.
We both have to keep at this, and we aren't the only ones. Having a real life friend would make a big difference to many on this board.
So ... how about it? Send a text?

That's what I was about to say as far as being proactive but I don't think I could have said it that well.
Invite someone out to discuss class... or to
not discuss class
It will be hard to go out on a limb but it might pay off big.
