ohh shoot, I forgot to go back and answer your question about the cake. Yup that's what I did, crispy cake for the decorations. Normally i just use cake for everything, but it's messy and stressful.

Have you worked with fondant before? I make a marshmallow one that is super easy and tastes a bit better then regular fondant. It's just a bag of icing sugar, bag of mini marshmallows, melted.. add the icing sugar and knead until like play doh, cool and add colour, and you just roll it out and cut it with a knife. When you roll it out just use icing sugar for the counter and the rolling pin so it doesn't stick. And lots of shortening or lard on your hands.

I made three layers, square, and different sizes. Green icing for the grass, and cookie crumbs for the dirt on the sides of the cake. Can;t remember exactly each layer. I made a pig, a chest, the character, the mining tools and a creeper and placed them on. We made trees out of mini marshmallows that I died with colouring, it was a pain in the butt. I wouldn't bother with that again .

If you google minecraft cakes there are some crazy ones, and some simplistic ones too, lots of good ideas there. Good luck with the cake making!!! I am sure it will be great and your son will love it!
