I'm not a doc, but really nearsighted people have very oblong eyes. Sometimes, especially as we age, the gooey substance in the eye cannot longer fit into this non spheric eye so it comes loose here and there and starts pulling on things. Many people have eyes where it sort of came loose without much of an issue, but the problem is if it is still partially attached to your retina in the back of your eye. If it is a simple case, you just live with it, but if you have a lot of retina involvement you will need treatment for that.
Only an eye doctor can see this. The eye examination is actually pretty simple. They dilate your pupils and you look into their machine and they can see almost anything wrong with your eyes. It doesn't even take long.
It might not even matter that you cannot drive yourself, because it is not recommended that you drive within the first ours of dilation. When I had it, I had to really squint to even find my bus home. The light was so intense. Wish I had brought sunglasses, LOL. So in either way, someone else providing transport is much safer.
