The one smell that I smelt the most was what smelled like toast. And there was no one cooking anything in the house. But I know what toast smells like and this smelt of toast.

I've thought about that and I don't think it is a spirit. I do believe in ghosts, and I do think there are spirits or something in my house, but this is not one of them. My great-grandfather fell down the basement stairs and hit his head on the cement floor and bled to death when my dad was 6 years old. (My dad is now 75.) So, I always felt great-grandpa was in the house. And... something else, too, which is a bit more... not human? Perhaps. Anyway, my dad lived in that house as a boy and had the same "ghostly" experiences. My husband has had experiences, my 6 year old has, too. And my mother-in-law, too.
But, this particular "man" isn't a spirit. We've lived in that house for 6 straight years now. And I lived there for 2 years before that, and my husband about 6 months during that time (a year in between we lived somewhere else.) This "man" is a new phenominon which started just about a year ago for me.
