When Steve said this:
"I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it "

He also mentions, "mate",and I would assume he is referring to humans,too. I met some people from Australia,and they used "matey" and/or "mate".
I'm sure his family came first,he was very family oriented,even though his work put him at risk.
Astronauts,cops,soldiers,etc. are at jobs that people can be at risk,leaving their families behind.
Steve's job was just not your average job.
He even said,he felt he had it all, a job he loved and a family he loved,he said "what more can one ask for".
That is so true.
His family has many of the world's people,including mine my deepest sympathy.
