Are you talking about marriage counseling or just couples counseling? My now ex-husband and I went for counseling and they did want to know about the past, and how we got together, and what it was like dating. Then they wanted to know all about the marriage itself and how things got so bad.

They did want some history, as far as our families and where we "came from." For instance, they wanted to know about my family because I had some issues, so i told them I came from parents who were both alcoholics. That answered some questions that they had. I had alot of fears, etc., and evidently that made sense to them.

So yes, they do want to know some of the past. They don't delve TOO much into it, and if there's some things you don't want to talk about, just tell them. I'm sure they'll understand.
