Here are some things I found here and there that relate to my boyfriend who we have diagnosed as having Aspergers, he always knew he didnt fit in but didnt know why, now he has heard about Asperger traits he feels like he has an 'answer'- His mode of operating is mental, he radiates a sense of “I know”. His learning style is analytical, intellectual and principled.
- He prefers detail, precision and clarity. He is thorough, methodical and systematic. He likes to know the logical relation of one thing to another.
- There is no room for chaos.
- A sense of distance, reserve, detachment. He feels things deeply but doesn’t express his feelings in obvious ways.
- A fear of being surprised, confused or overwhelmed by irrational or chaotic circumstances which leads to a strong need for control. He panics when he doesn’t understand, answers are his security.
- Becomes overly mental. In the confused mode, his mind spins overlapping thoughts and ties itself in knots. Overfed by thoughts the mind makes things more complicated than necessary. He loses direct perception of the situation, loses connection to what is really happening in his rages.
- He becomes self righteous and closed. The “I know” becomes “I am right”. He listens to my opinion only to establish his own more firmly. He does not admit that he is wrong. He loves to outsmart his opponents.
- His inadequacy comes from a feeling that he doesn’t understand, combined with a need to be right or be perfect. If he isn’t perfect, he feels guilty.
- He turns inwards, building a wall around himself to maintain his version of the world. The irony is that in pushing away what doesn’t fit into his perspective, he becomes cornered by his own aggression and the walls make him feel alienated.
- Longing for contact which he can’t accept. Suppressing his emotions in fear he will get trapped emotionally
- Convincing the world he holds the correct view leads to a chronic feeling of anger. He either blames others or is very hard on himself- or both. His rigid sharpness becomes criticism, harshness, and irritability
- His high reactivity makes him ready to jump, to pursue.
- At best, he is cynical.
- He has a fascination with being an oppressor, defeating others.
