I can completely imagine how hard it would be to lose one that way though My boy is 26 and I suddenly realised how NEVER ready I'll be, let alone for it to be like that. He's been the one things that's stuck with me for the last 11 years. So Fingers crossed!

I'm guessing you use a mobile vet service? Do they have a portable x-ray?

I still have my first horse. He's 30 this year, and starting to really struggle with keeping weight on and he's become a bit senile. And he does not see or hear all that well. Before, the rest of the herd was caring for him -- keeping track of him in the pasture, making sure at least one other horse was with him all the time. Lately though, they have started to just leave him when he wanders off or is disoriented. It's hard to watch, though it doesn't happen often. He still seems mostly happy.
