From my experience/what I've been told in the USA if you go to the hospital and tell them you want to SI etc... they will have you as an inpatient strait away. However if you aren't doing SI they most likely will turn you away. My T said there was no guarantee that the ER would take me in however I'm glad I didn't because I didn't want to be committed with others more crazy than I. Someone told me the local hospital would have committed me for 5 days no questions asked if I told them I had thoughts of SI.
Currently I'm in a partial hospitalization program (go there during the day and go home mid afternoon. Next week I step down to intensive outpatient.
I have heard of some people in the US getting home treatment (for example they can't leave there house etc...) but it's rare for professionals to do this at least where I live.
