miss p i found some more info
If you downloaded and installed the Sun Microsystems java there is a way to switch between using the Microsoft version Java and the Sun version Java. I'm assuming you have the 1.4 version as what you just downloaded. (My version is older and I don't have the same controls here... i don't want to change and risk "breaking" what is currently working for me

)
According to the Sun webpage there are two places to look (and they recommend looking at both places to be sure).
First, in
Tools=>
Internet Options where we were before, again on the
Advanced tab, scroll down and see if you have a separate entry for
"Java (Sun)". To switch between which Java plugin you are using, check or uncheck the boxes next to "Use Java 2 v 1.4x for applet (requires restart)" and next to "Microsoft VM". Since you are currently unable to connect to the chatroom I'd say just change whichever setting you have now to the other to see if that works.
You will have to close Internet Explorer and then restart it to complete the change
You should also check the Java control panel. Open up the
Control Panel in Windows and look for the
Java Control Panel or
Java Plug-in. Double click on it to open it. Check the
Browser tab and there should be checkboxes with all the browsers that you have installed (might only be Internet Explorer). Change the checkbox next to the browser you are using (IE) to enable or disable the Sun version Java for that browser. If in the IE "Tools" options you turned the Sun Java on, make sure the setting matches in the Java Control panel (i.e. that it is checked next to Internet Explorer. If you turned
off the Sun java in IE and turned on Microsoft Java, then make sure the checkbox in the control panel is UNchecked.
Again you will have to close and restart the browser for this to take effect.
Hopefully one of these ideas will get you back into chat!
