Just attempt to take it at surface value for now. Try not to read stuff in to it that's not there. Try not to push away, but tell him up front that you've been hurt before and you want to go real slow. If he's not willing to abide by your wishes, drop him, but you need to keep your own emotions in check and not go to fast either for fear that it's all or nothing. I wish you the best of luck.
