That would be awesome if perpetual peace breaks out. But, I don't believe that there is anything that could suddenly change people to remove war from the world.

Not in one day, at least. Unless, of course, it is the end o the world.... but I don't believe in that exactly.
I believe humans can go extinct. Either by natural disaster like a giant meteor falling on us or something very powerful like a full out nuclear war... which, all of those I don't wish on the world. I think that if there was a giant meteor we'd know it by now. Even if the governments were able to keep that type of secret, too many people are into astronomy and science and the internet is powerful enough that word would get out.
War, who can predict the insanity of someone who as the finger on the button? So, that's just a hope it doesn't happen thing.
As for the Mayan calander I have 2 opinions.
1) If they are right, then it won't be the "end of the world," but the end of an era like you say. But, we live in such a different time than the Mayans. Their erra is ended. Although Mayans still exist, they are not in the best situation. I've seen where they live and my heart goes out for them. They live in a tropical world surrounded by poverty and the violence of drug lords.

The ancestors of one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world show exactly how the fate of your people can be turned.
What is the new era? I don't know. If it's true, then the gears are already in motion.
2) The calander only goes so far because those keeping it were either killed or run off. Maybe they only got so far because it was the end of their era as the Spanish came and started taking over. The keeper of the prophecy or whatever was no longer able to continue the work. Their whole world was changed.
Then my third idea is that it's a bit of both. They saw that their civilization was changed suddenly, so their calander predicts that it will happen again. The rise and fall of nations is a cycle. And just because those nations still exist, they don't necessarily hold the same power they once did. Rome. Egypt. Soviet Union. British Empire. You see?
Tomorrow will come and go. I don't predict a sudden change in anything. It will be another day. If things change, it's already in the workings and it's already in motion.
