In August of 2011, I had a brief moment of sanity during a psychotic manic episode and asked my roommate to take me to the hospital. I hadn't told her about my diagnosis and recently found out that she told the hospital I must be on drugs. When I got there, I told them to look in my wallet (I have a card with my diagnosis written on it) and I was rushed to a psychiatric hospital.
I'm finally sane enough to look at my discharge papers, and this is my discharge diagnosis:
Axis I:
- (296.44) Bipolar I disorder, most recent episode (or current) manic, severe, specified as with psychotic behavior (This is accurate. I was completely psychotic.)
- Polysubstance Abuse (Abusing three or more psychoactive drugs, often simultaneously.)
Here's the thing. I don't abuse drugs, and the hospital never did any drug or blood tests. They just took my roommates word as the truth and sent me straight to the psych hospital.
I'm pretty upset and want to cry. Is this an instance of my physicians being irresponsible, or am I overreacting?
