Well, I'm not a woman, but I do know what you're talking about. The duck beak thing is, I'm pretty sure, called a speculum (which is about as fun to say as the application ). I'd wager that it's simply a matter of you being a little on the "small" side, to speak lightly. I don't think it's entirely abnormal...speaking as a guy, and thus taken with a grain of salt, any device meant to stretch such a sensitive part to the point it can be easily peered inside of cannot be comfortable in the slightest.

Ickydog gave good advice though. The women's health section will likely be more use to you than I. While I feel like I'm making a safe guess, I'd rather you have better knowledge than my speculation, regardless of how sound I think it may be.
