You should work to be the person you want to be, yes that is true. You should grow and become the person you feel is a good person for you and your family.
However, you should do it so that you're true to yourself. They should be changes you want to make because you want to make them, not because someone is telling you that you should do that. Changing to meet someone else's perception of the perfect you only leads to resentment and destruction. Learning your destructive behaviors and how to resolve them into positive behaviors is key.
