Most of what I've experienced at a first session is similar to what everyone has said above. Most of the therapists I've met with have been extremely empathetic and kind. I felt no need to hold back.

But, my current therapist was different. She was cold and a bit aggressive our first meeting - she challenged me to an intellectual "duel"! But after the initial shock let out, she was absolutely wonderful. At the end of our 2-hour session she told me how her aggressive approach was an intentional strategy she uses with clients who over-think. She basically wanted to upset me (just a little) to get a rise out of me to get me talking about my feelings and not simply my thoughts.

It was a brilliant move and I have deep respect for her now.

Good luck!
