I was just going to suggest physical therapy too. You shouldn't do ANY exercises unless you've been taught how to do them the PROPER way by a physical therapist.
Ask your doc to send you to physical therapy. Or ask him to give you a print out of the proper way to do these strengthening exercises, if that's all you need. I would think that since you have pain, he'd run some tests to make sure there's nothing going on in there. But that's up to him.
