I do try to be patient and not offer advice after the first time. I think only once has it worked to actually say 'stay if you're going to stay and leave if you're going to leave, but in either event, suck it up and stop making every one around you miserable.' In one case, the person stopped and said I was right and then they left to think over what they were going to do. They stayed, and at least acted happy about it. In other cases, people have just said they wanted to talk through their choices. We go over all of the choices we can see, but the person shoots down EVERY SINGLE IDEA. At that point (and it has happened several times to me over the years), my patience is usually shot. Lately I've taken to saying, "well I guess you're screwed. That's too bad. I'm hungry; let's go eat." That tactic seems to annoy my friends but at least then they stop ****ing talking about it to me.
