The only other thing I could think of suggesting here is if you would have any ability to lucid dream here. It takes a lot of practice, but it can help retain information. Have you ever had the luxury of naturally becoming aware that you are dreaming while your dreaming? If you can tune in on those moments and make yourself snapshots of moments. Tell yourself this isn't real, it's a dream, I must remember, and continue with the journaling process. There are various books that can help prepare your mind for lucid dreaming.

You could also practice meditation before falling asleep. It will help you to gain control of this part of your mind.
