TRIGGER WARNING SUI and possible callousness

I have had 2 close friends who tried to commit suicide. One was successful at the first try and after having been deeply depressed for years but no one knew how bad it was. Her husband and children were shocked as were her friends.

The other was one of my closest friends who kept making attempts. She really, it seemed, just wanted to be loved enough. She would give away cars, houses, money etc to people and then not get enough love back in return (her description). For me it was a kind of situation where after the first one, I told her I wanted her to live and would be there for her and would miss her if she succeeded - but the choice to live or die was hers and I was not going to try talk her out of it, or into living or come running to the hospital all worked up over it. I felt like she was using the attempts to get reassurance she was loved. I certainly could be wrong as to that being one of the reasons, but I told her about it and we had an understanding from then on. She would come to me after she got out of the hospital(more than once), lived with me on and off, but I did not get the emotional assaults after that. I do not believe one can save someone else.
