I'm so sorry. I think parents should really consider that what they tell their kids (when its negative) really doesn't help anything. (I was told something that made me feel horrible and useless by my mom today).
I know you said you tried some breathing techniques, have you tried doing something enjoyable or to get your mind off of your upcoming midterms? Do stretches, drink some tea or something hot, take a bath or watch a funny movie? I know that trying to not think about and study for midterms is hard work - but trying to study for an exam where you're not giving it a lot of attention really isn't all that worth it.
