for anyone that thinks that right now society is tolerant of race - i dont think you have the slightest clue of what the heck goes on.
part of the reason why so many people decades ago werent tolerant of african americans is because they didnt have to be and they werent looked down on if they werent. racial tension was acceptable and racism was tolerated because it was EXPECTED. to say a simple example - if you were white and didnt like african americans it was understood because they were thought of as a lesser society. psychiatry even coined them to have rampant mental illness just because they were a different race. thats a couple of examples.
and its not much different today with how people still feel and what they believe. only difference is theres laws that keep hate crime more at bay. KKK is still around - they call themselves Stormfront now and their website is one of the most visited sites on the web. their hate isnt limited to A-Americans but all other races and gay people too.
if you still dont understand how extremely awful it still is you can look at how people right now treat middle eastern and mexican people in the USA. because the issues that go on. going through the news sites and hearing political commentators talk about Obama is so discriminatory because his race. his election reignited some of the racial divisions that have laid dormant or hidden in peoples personal lives. yet no one addresses that hes half white too. there is a colloquailism called the "One Drop Rule" that said if you had even 1/10 or a certain fraction of black in you you are automatically considered black disregarding any other ethnicities.
some people mostly or fully believe racism is no longer or has mostly dwindled but its very far from the truth. and those who say it arent exactly coming out of their own bubble either.
