Grants are given based upon income and family size. If you have a child of your own, your parent's income is not a factor. If you are a single mother, you most probably would be eligible for grants (money that you do not have to pay back).
When my husband I seperated for a period of time 18 years ago I was working as a CENA. One of the nurses asked me why I didn't go to school to become an RN. I have four kids to support! Duh. She replied that 4 years before she quit her job as a CENA, applied for assistance. She got rental, food stamps (which according to her she they never ate better) heat, utilities, childcare, living expenses, medical, all college related costs (Books, transportation, THEY HELPED HER BUY A CAR etc) fully paid for. I asked "how do you quit a perfectly good job and get assistance? Why don't they tell you to go back to work?" She said they just don't.
Good for you Anika! There is no shame in working.
