I'm mostly indifferent to the like button itself, but I find the listing of those that "liked" a post in the body of the post itself really distracting. I also find the listing of how many likes were received very annoying.

I think the like button itself could remove some of the safety and support of the site. Suddenly, it becomes about how many likes your post can receive, rather than genuine support from others.
