For me I don't even have to be anxious to get bad feelings if I start thinking about my breathing. If I start thinking about it and keep thinking I lose the ability to breathe naturally and I start to breathe either too much or too little. And I will feel like I don't get enough air or maybe more than I should have?? Bad anyway.
So every time I think about breathing I distract myself away from it at once. I think or do things that makes it impossible for me to think about breathing at the same time and then my breathing goes back to totally normal when my body takes care of it and I don't try consciously. Very soon I feel better because when I don't think of it my body naturally gets what it needs.
