I would guess that this place is mostly a shelter where big cats end up after the silly humans who think they would make good pets have realized that they do not make good pets when they get too big to handle and lose their cuteness.
Wild animals belong in the wild. Unfortunately the wild is shrinking due to human encroachment. Eventually the habitats will be lost to civilization.
I'm not sure there is any reason to preserve the species if they have no natural habitat. I agree... it's tough sharing a world with humans.
