I have corned my own beef before. The only thing in it that would be off (assuming you are willing to consume beef brisket and salt) is that to keep the color pink you add pink curing salt (nitrite - and just a tiny amount). And some recipes don't call for that but then the beef turns grey. Otherwise it is basically pickling spices and kosher salt.
