Totally recommend Ordinary People- I believe it won Best Picture and several acting awards. It deals with the breakdown of an upper-middle class family...when the movie (closely follows the book) begins their teenage son has just returned from a mental hospital after attempting to take his life. The therapy scenes between Timothy Hutton (the son) and Judd Hirsch (the psychiatrist) are so well acted.
