What about "The Tales of Narnia"? She's small enough the she won't get the religious overtones.
Also, what about "The Hobbit"?
Although they are written by an American about the American frontier, the "Laura Ingles Wilder" books are fantastic.
What is her reading level, Mellors. That counts a lot. I can help you find something better if I know her reading level.
