Depending on how old you are and how old your great grand parents are they never accepted a hand out because they probably wasn't a hand out. The social safety net that we know of happened after the Great Depression. But even during the Great Depression there were programs to try and get people working. For example there were a lot of work done on the public infrastructure and many of those jobs were created to help people work. Families were split up, people married at a very young age, kids went to work. And by kids I mean really really young kids.

Medicaid didn't exist until 1965. The Food stamp program as we know it didn't start until 1965 either. There was a pilot program that ran in the 30s but it was discontinued.

The economy sucks right now, ssome people have nice things because they bought it before they lost their jobs and what not. I know a couple who would love to sell their car and buy a cheaper one but they are underwater on their car and their house. So they drive the car and keep paying because it would cost them money to sell their car and get a "cheaper" car.
I appreciate you trying to give me another way to look at it. I unfortunately live in a city and there are are many MANY families who abuse the system. I can understand if people genuinely need it, it was designed to be in desperate times and only until people could get back on their feet.
In my neighborhood alone, there are at least 3 families on it. One of them has 2 generations of people that are sucking the tit of the government, the mother has 4 children with 3 different men, and now her oldest son is on welfare & foodstamps and section 8 (free housing). Her other sons live there. She has collected welfare for years now. I'm sorry, but for all the free vocational training programs and free career training in this city, there is just NO excuse. People continue to pop out kids so they get more money.
Another family has 2 children on free lunch (A family member of mine works at the local elementary school), they receive welfare, and are probably on section 8, the parents are "divorced" but the father stays there, he works for a construction company FULL TIME, yet his kids get free lunch. They are Brazilians. He owns property in Brazil.
So, hopefully opens your eyes to the abuse that happens with the welfare system. There is a lack of pride in the recent generations. The attitude is, what can I get for nothing, instead of, what can I accomplish if I work hard?
