According to this CBS News article (
link) entitled "Troops With Stress Disorders Fit For Duty?" states that some soldiers diagnosed with PTSD are being redeployed to fight in the Iraq war.
Goodness gracious!
It saddens me that the military psychiatrists, psychologists, and/or social workers that were involved in these individual soldiers' care did not intervene and advocate for these soldiers. These soldiers should have been redesignated to a non-deployable unit or should have been processed out of the military.
We have mentally unstable soldiers fighting in Iraq. Gasp! These U.S. soldiers are treated with antidepressants and allowed to fire a weapon in combat in the fight for Iraqi freedom?
I don't think stigma of mental illness or ignorance explains "why" the military supervisors are allowing their soldiers to return to duty after diagnosed with PTSD. Apathy explains it.
I feel sorry for all involved.
