At this point, only As I Lay Dying is on our district's reading list (what is approved to teach to whole classrooms

), but I can get away with much more variety when I do smaller reading circles (those choices don't have to necessarily come from the prescribed reading list). As I Lay Dying isn't my favorite, but I'll have to take a look at Light in August. It looks like an intriguing plot.
One of our retired teachers is one the foremost Faulkner experts in the world. He even looks like Faulkner. (God, he was/is the most amazing English teacher!) May have to get in touch with him. He'll be able to tell me if it would pass muster for approval in our district with our conservative policies (don't get me started).
