Realize that not all the people you see that are appearing to have a good time, may not be. Being in a depressive state is like living in a giant bubble. The outside world looks so far away and everyone out there seems so normal. When you get to know people, often times you find out that they really aren't as happy as they appear. Family problems, abuse, depression and other are things that some seem to be able to hide. Watch carefully, you may see members of the group that seem distracted.

As for coping. I think everyone finds their own way of getting through. Finding a forum like this is helpful. It makes you realize that you are not alone in your depression. It is a day to day struggle, but talking to others helps. Do you have a therapist? If not, you might want to consider this option. There are medications that can help you get through the worst of it while you and a therapist work on the underlying causes of your depression.

I can't speak for everyone, but some of the ways I cope are through biofeedback and meditation. It doesn't take the depression away, but it does help with the anxiety that goes along with it. If you are able to, walking helps as well. Not necesarly on the street, where there are distractions, but in the woods and parks where you have the quiet you need to think. Remember that any thoughts you may be having concerning low self esteem, disinterest in life etc. are all artificial. They are symptoms of your depression and though they feel real, they are not who you really are.
