My T usually used a subtle after shave--didn't seem strong enough to be a cologne. But occasionally, he would be wearing a stonger--and wonderful--cologne, and between that and the serious suit, I always knew those were days he had off campus meetings. I think he deliberately avoided the cologne on only client days to not intrude.
