I am not sure that you need to become a better person, so I do not see how catalyzing your personal growth would be the right application of your energy, but you do need to realize that you need to
like a person enough for any relationship to be worth it. You do not report liking the guy. The OP is fairly long, but you still do not mention liking him. It is not clear whether he likes you, either.

So someone you do not seem to even like enough wants to be committed to you in the long run. Why do you need his commitment?
