Agree with the above. I'm a recovering alcoholic with 21+ years sobriety, and I still get cravings and the urge to drink when I'm severely anxious or upset; however, I cannot recall even one incident when I even THOUGHT of falling off the wagon with Ativan. (The lone exception being the night a little over a year ago when I was suicidal and thought about taking the entire bottle.) Guess I've just never made a connection between chugging a fifth of Jack Daniel's and taking a few extra benzo's.
Your sponsor is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG to tell you how to manage your medications. You wouldn't expect a building contractor to teach you how to live a sober life; well, your sponsor has no business playing amateur psychiatrist either. You'd probably be better off finding a new sponsor and putting all the cards on the table at the start, e.g., you listen to her/him and use what works for you, and s/he doesn't try to undermine your medication therapy. JMHO.
