What I decided I want is something compact but with a large enough view screen for easy following, also I want audio with it, and automatic updating of maps. I prefer the real life look of streets, rather than the map views. I want something small enough that if I need it for walking in a strange town, or even something to give me coordinates say if I'm on a boat... yeah.
QVC also carries some GPS. (their items are usually better for some reason, not outdated, not picked through and returned broken. I don't have good success with HSN though my mom does.)

I'm sure he'll be happy! Look for ease of installation and removal, as you can't leave them in the car if they're portable.
