Depression seems to get worse when you are by yourself and engaged in some activity. Your mind starts to dwell on darker things and once that ball gets rolling, it can be hard to stop.
bharani has a good point about finding a counsellor. You don't have to have a major crisis to get help. Sometimes its just a matter of finding some new coping skills. At the very least, you will bet a jump on things before they get you really down.
If you have a hobby that sponsers a club, like painting or some instruments, those are always good places to make new friends that have like interests.
