I can only tell about my experience in life. I hope it helps.
A few years ago I was feeling very empty in my life. I had a husband and kids, and a full time job. I was busy, but not so busy that I didn't have time for something else in my life. It struck me one day that what I needed to do was volunteer my time. But at what??? I had absolutely no idea. So I made a list of causes that I was interested in and started making phone calls and doing research on them. I finally narrowed it down to being a Guardian Ad Litem for abused/neglected children. It was a wonderful experience and it filled my heart and soul so that soon I didn't feel empty anymore. I felt light, my heart sang. Even though the it was a horribly difficult job to do, I knew I was doing good for a child who needed someone in their corner.
Unfortunately, a few things happened in my life and I had to give it up. But, it taught me that we all have something to give to another human being, whether it be for the long or short term, it didn't matter.
If you decide to do volunteer work, you may find that it takes a couple of different places before you find your nitch, or you might hit it right on the nail the first time. The important thing about volunteering is that you end up receiving 100times more than whatever you give.
Not to mention, when volunteering, you get to meet some of the most wonderful people from all walks of life. It' s a great way to broaden your circle of friends and acquaintances
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you all the best!
Hugssssssss
