Personally, I think a therapist would be better equiped to diagnose you. Nothing against GP's, many people see them for anti-depressants.
I know you are probably scared about bringing up the subject, but there isn't the stigma that goes with mental illness that there used to be. Just be honest, tell your Dr. why you think you are depressed and what you can do about it.
Sometimes, if you go to a therapist or psychiatrist, they will have you answer a written set of questions that help rule out some problems, and rule in others. Which every you go to, if you have the guts to go in the first place, then you have the guts to ask about it. I commend you for that. Many people either go into denial or simply can't make themselves go forward.
