They don't really know yet although there are some candidate genes---but right now there is also linkage genetically between autism, schizophrenia and bipolar with the same genes and just because you have a gene doesn't mean you get the disease. Schizophrenia is both genetic and environmental so even with identical genes as in twins there is only about a 50/50 chance that you'll get sick.
