Did you ever read The Short- Timers by Gustav Hasford? It seems Herr's book and Hasford's book both heavily influenced the movie Full Metal Jacket. Hasford worked as a writer on the film. Check Hasford out on Wikipedia, a very strange dude, arrested for grand theft library, he actually did prison time for not returning library books. He was an international book thief.
