My psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder after having treated me and seen me cycle over the period of about a year. Previously my diagnosis was major depression but the rapid cycling clarified my diagnosis (a very common problem with bipolar disorder). I also have PTSD. It was diagnosed many years ago by a previous therapist.
